Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a comprehensively devised tool that measures and tracks hunger globally as well as by region and by country.
Who publishes Global Hunger Index report?
Created in 2006, the Global Hunger Index (GHI) was originally published by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Welthungerhilfe. In 2007, the Irish NGO Concern Worldwide also became a co-publisher.
Eventually, in 2018, the Global Hunger Index (GHI) became a joint project of Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide, with IFPRI stepping down from its association in the report.
GHI 100-point scale
The Index ranks countries based on a 100-point scale, with 0 being the best score (no hunger) and 100 being the worst.
- 0 to 9.9 reflect low hunger
- 10.0 to 19.9 reflect moderate hunger
- 20.0 to 34.9 indicate serious hunger
- 35.0 to 49.9 reflect alarming hunger
- 50.0 or more reflect extremely alarming hunger levels.
The GHI combines 4 component indicators:
- The proportion of the undernourished as a percentage of the population
- The proportion of children under the age of 5 years suffering from wasting
- The proportion of children under the age of 5 years suffering from stunting
- The mortality rate of children under the age of 5 years.
